3-Day Wearable Art Workshop: Tell Your Story in a Circular Vest

3-Day Wearable Art Workshop with Patricia A. Montgomery: Tell Your Story in a Circular VestDates/Times: Friday-Sunday, May 3-5, 2019, 9:00am-5:00pm each dayLocation: North Charleston City Hall - Montague Conference Room on 2nd Floor (Friday), Buist Conference Room on 3rd Floor (Saturday & Sunday) PRESENTED AS A COMPONENT OF THE 2019 NORTH CHARLESTON ARTS FESTIn this 3-day advanced wearable art workshop, nationally and internationally exhibiting fiber artist Patricia A. Montgomery will instruct participants in traditional African American quilting design and construction techniques to create a circular quilted vest illustrating personal stories. The African American quilt tradition is characterized by vivid color palettes, strong contrasting color combinations, asymmetrical and strip piecing, uneven and large quilting stitches, the use of hidden protective charm symbols, large design elements, appliqued figurative images, and interpretations of Anglo-American traditional patterns. The wide range of styles, design elements, and construction techniques are most often employed to illustrate historical and cultural events of the quilt maker’s life. With Patricia’s guidance, participants will turn their ideas into a one of a kind wearable art vest! Participants must furnish their own sewing machine and materials. A supply list and workshop prep instructions will be provided by the artist. There will be a one-hour lunch break each day. Participants may bring their own lunch or purchase a boxed lunch at time of registration. Workshop Schedule:Day One: Introductions -  The goal for the day is to complete measurements; making sure that vests fit for each student; learning about each student's story composition; working towards creating a completed design using fusible Batiks and African fabrics, digital images, and overall quilting design.  Day Two: Finish working on design composition, adding any text; begin machine quilting.  Day Three: Complete the quilting and add finishing touches such as binding for the armholes, embellishments, and buttons. Workshop participants will share their creative wearable story vests with one another. About the instructor:Patricia A. Montgomery received her BFA in Fine Art from Holy Names College and her MFA in Fine Art from John F. Kennedy University. Her textile paintings have been exhibited in both national and international exhibitions. She has exhibited in venues in California, Texas, Costa Rica, and South Africa, among others. She currently lives in Oakland, California. Montgomery will present an exhibition of her fiber work, titled Honoring the Heroines of the Civil Rights Movement, as part of the North Charleston Arts Fest in the same venue as the workshop (North Charleston City Hall).
