      The Cigar Factory

Michele Moore's acclaimed novel, The Cigar Factory, is now a full-length play. Join us for a reading of this new play, set in Charleston during World War I and World War II. The Cigar Factory is based on a true story of two women, one white and one black, who work at the Charleston Cigar Factory in the 1930's and 40's. The Cigar Factory is run by white men who harass the women, pay them little, and make them work long difficult hours. Finally, these two women meet and have the courage to fight back. Together they work to unionize the factory and make it a safe and better place for all of the women who work there. The book and play incorporate many Charleston scenes and traditions, including the Gullah dialect and way of life. It also is believed that this was the start of the use of the song "We Shall Overcome" as a song of resistance to over come oppression for African Americans. The reading is a benefit to raise funds for a fully produced production in the near future.
